Measures to prevent drunk driving in Arlington to be strictly enforced

The Arlington Police Department in Texas, which regularly records around 120 DWI arrests per month, will be working on new measures aimed at not only preventing drunk driving but also to stop it in the first place.

Police chief Will Johnson said that the initiatives that the police department has launched include proper education and dissemination of information about the dangers of drunk driving, proper enforcement of drunk driving laws, and suggestions to tweak such laws so as to give them more strength.

Arlington’s police force will be taking turns in helping the eight-member DWI Unit to look for drunk drivers, particularly in areas where previous drunk driving accidents have occurred. The police will also work with tandem with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission to give proper training to drinking establishments, whose patrons are usually arrested for DWIs, on how to handle their customers so as to prevent incidents of drunken-driving crashes.

Six Flags Over Texas denies responsibility for guest’s death

Arlington-based amusement park Six Flags Over Texas recently claimed it was not responsible for the death of 52-year-old Dallas resident Rosa Esparza.

Esperza fell from the 14-story Texas Giant roller coaster on July 19 2013. Her family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in October in Tarrant County District Court.

Six Flags said an investigation found the ride had no technical effects; the company, though, installed seat belts and modified the ride’s restraining bar pads after the incident.

The Texas Giant started taking in guests in 1990 but was closed in 2009 to undergo a $10-million renovation, reopening in April 2011.

Jury told that BP caused toxic exposure to neighbors

BP PLC exposed nearby residents of its defective Texas City refinery to at least 500,000 pounds (227,000 kilograms) of harmful gases, a lawyer told a Texas jury of eight women and four men in his closing statements on the first three of almost 48,000 toxic-exposure claims on Tuesday, October 8.

The prosecutor added that the British multinational oil and gas company would have been backed by more than $20 million had it chosen to shut down its faulty unit to conduct repairs.

After four weeks of testimony, the jurors  began deliberating last Wednesday, October 9.

The plaintiffs are seeking almost  $200,000 in actual damages each, plus $10 billion in punitive damages, which they will donate to charity.
