The family of the North Texas teens who died last year when an 18-wheeler struck their vehicle is fighting against the proposal of lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to relax trucking laws in the country, KDFW Fox 4 reported on June 16.
Police investigation regarding the accident that killed 17-year old AnnaLeah Karth and 13-year-old Mary Karth showed that the truck driver who hit the Karths’ vehicle was fatigued from long hours driving, which the police said can be as serious as driving drunk.
A point of contention in United States trucking laws is the number of hours truckers can drive at a time. Truckers frequently work twice the hours that an average person does, and citizens are concerned that fatigued drivers are more likely to cause accidents.

General Motors Co. and Delphi Automotive Systems LLC requested on May 20 that lawsuits concerning defective ignition switches filed against them be consolidated and transferred to a multidistrict litigation panel, The Detroit News reported on May 21.
The petition, brought before the Supreme Court of Texas, aims to streamline existing cases and expected future cases. GM spokesman Greg Martin said that the move was made for practical reasons. This way, defendants won’t have to individually produce the same evidence and witnesses, and pretrial rulings of individual cases won’t conflict.
Texas attorney Robert Hilliard, the legal counsel handling most of the personal injury and wrongful death claims against GM, said GM’s latest move is a tactic meant to delay litigation of the cases.

Families of people victimized by defective GM vehicles are speaking out against the manufacturer. Faulty ignition switches in GM vehicles have caused more than one dozen deaths and many more injuries. Angry family members want individuals within the company to be held legally responsible for failing to disclose the defects in a timely manner.
On Wednesday, April 3, Senator Claire McCaskill said that the lead ignition switch engineer on the Chevy Cobalt has actively attempted to hide the fact that the ignition switches are deficient.
Should it be proven that GM’s employees did intentionally choose to not disclose information regarding their vehicles’ maladies, legal experts said that it is much easier to accuse a corporation of wrongdoing, rather than individuals.
