At least 15 people were injured yesterday when several cars hit each other during the IndyCar race at the Grand Prix of Houston. Among the injured are at least 13 fans, one race official, and driver Dario Franchitti.
The accident occurred when Franchitti’s car hit Takuma Sato’s car, sending Franchitti’s car flying into a fence before it fell back to the track and was hit by E.J. Viso’s car. Debris flew into the grandstand, causing fans to be injured. According to officials, at least 11 fans were treated at Reliant Park, while two were treated at a local hospital.
Franchitti sustained two broken vertebrae, a broken ankle, and a severe concussion.
Race officials and the promotion company for the race stated the following, “Officials are investigating the incident and currently do not have further information at this time. Fan and driver safety are always a primary concern and we will provide further details as they are available.”
